AMERICAN ISRAEL CORPORATION
PNC Declaration
Continued from preceding page
"fighting in defense of true
Judaism. Israel does not
represent the Jewish
heritage."
The media gave the impres-
sion that the PNC's declara-
tion of independence was
greeted by unanimous ap-
probation. In fact, the Islamic
organizations that dominate
Palestinian politics in the
Gaza Strip called for a 3-day
strike and a subsequent
period of mourning (Jeru-
salem Domestic Service, Nov.
20 and Al-Quds Palestinian
Arab Radio (Nov. 17).
Muhammad Husayn Fadlal-
lah, the spiritual leader of the
Lebanese Shi'ite Hizballah
organization said the "so-
called" PNC had "no right to
recognize the existence of the
Zionist regime or to renounce
even an inch of Palestinian
land" (Tehran Domestic Ser-
vice, Nov. 17). And Al-Quds
Palestinian Arab Radio (Nov.
12) said the proclamation
"means the recognition of the
Zionist entity on the ruins of
our entity." The Palestinian
Popular Struggle Front re-
jected the PNC resolution as
did the PFLP-GC which
called acceptance of Resolu-
tion 242 "a serious act of
treason" (Al-Quds Palestinian
Arab Radio Nov. 16 and 17).
In typically contradictory
fashion, Libya recognized the
new Palestinian state, but
condemned the implicit
recognition of Israel and
labeled those responsible
"traitors and defeatists." The
Libyan statement also said
"Arabs and Israel cannot co-
exist" and that "the current
Arab generation now has to
continue without hesitation
the struggle until the Israeli
state is destroyed" (Tanjug,
Nov. 18).
One reason Americans may
be willing to accept the claim
that the PLO has renounced
terrorism is that they are
unaware of the regularity
with which terrorism occurs.
Unless an act is particularly
heinous it goes unreported in
the U.S. media, but a reading
of the Israeli press indicates
that terrorist attacks take
place every week, and the
PLO and its rival factions do
not hesitate to take credit for
these attacks. When a
grenade attack in Haifa in-
jured 25 people last August,
three different Palestinian
groups claimed responsibility,
including the PLO.
Israel has been widely con-
demned for its policy of depor-
ting Palestinians. There were
no U.S. protests or U.N.
resolutions, however, con-
demning Egypt's decision to
deport eight Palestinians
from Cairo to guarantee that
country's security (MENA,
Nov. 8). When Israel deports
Palestinians it is front-page
news; when Egypt does it
goes unreported.
Arab propagandists assert
that they are not anti-Semitic
and the failure of the press to
report otherwise allows them
to get away with their claim.
The Arab press shows no
hesitation, however, in print-
Yassir Arafat: But what did he say
to Cairo?
ing blatantly anti-Semitic
remarks.
A common manifestation of
Arab anti-Semitism is the
repetition of canards relating
to Jewish power, no doubt the
product of reading the Pro-
tocols of the Elders of Zion
(which is sometimes speci-
fically cited as a source).
American Jews are frequent-
ly attributed with ownership
of the media and the power to
control U.S. foreign policy.
Iraqi Foreign Minister,
Sa'dun Hammadi, said U.S.
accusations that his country
used chemical weapons
against the Kurds were "first
launched by the U.S. media
when the New York Times
and the Washington Post
published reports written by
two journalists whose rela-
tionship with Zionist forces is
very well known" (Al-Thaw-
rah, Sept. 23). Another Iraqi
official "affirmed that the
U.S. Senate's approval of a
draft law imposing economic
measures against Iraq ob-
viously proves the Zionist
influence on [U.S.] decision-
making. . ." (INA, September
10). Cairo's Al-Ahram news-
paper (September 13), attri-
buted U.S. sanctions against
Iraq "to Zionist influence
which sometimes directs U.S.
policy in the wrong direction."
The most consistently anti-
Semitic remarks emanate
from Muslim fundamen-
talists. The Arab-Israeli con-
flict is always characterized
here as a political dispute.
Thus, Arab calls for a holy
war are usually dismissed as
rhetoric, but Muslim leaders
sincerely believe they are
engaged in a jihad against
Israel.
