FRIDAY OCTOBER 28, 1988

Singles To Be Featured
At Orthodox Convention

While world renowned lay
and rabbinic leaders will
debate the crucial issues fac-
ing the Jewish community at
the Orthodox Union's 90th
anniversary gala convention,
to be held Thanksgiving
weekend, Nov. 24-27, at
Philadelphia's luxurious
Wyndham Plaza, Orthodox
singles will be given a full op-
portunity to participate in the
exchange of ideas.
According to Saul Quinn,
the OU convention chairman,
there will be special sessions
with such noted figures as
Rabbi Hershel Schacter, the
Rosh Kollel of RIETS/Yeshiva
University, to confront the
special Halachic concerns fac-
ing singles, as well as recrea-
tional activities and discus-
sion groups led by the experts
who serve on the Marriage
Commission of the Orthodox
Union.
The Marriage Commission
of the Orthodox Union was
organized in response to a
major increase in the number
of Jewish adults living alone.
The underlying attitudinal
changes noted by sociologists
challenge the traditional con-
cepts of loyalty and family
responsibility. Traditional at-
titudes of marriage, family,
and singlehood are at war
with contemporary obses-
sions with personal growth
and fulfillment, thus com-
pounding the difficulties in
the honorable traditional
Jewish pursuit of
matchmaking.
Studies have found that
marriagable age Jewish men
and women often lack
suitable channels in which to
meet others from different
localities. They seek special
programs, operated with
discretion and sensitivity to
individual needs. The Or-
thodox Union's Marriage Pro-
gram features a full screening
process, with a face-to-face in-
terview, carefully planned
programs and field trips, and
the creation of tasteful , en-
joyable, and family-oriented
environment such as the
Union's National Convention
in which Jewish singles can
"Mix and Match" most effec-
tively and comfortably.
According to an announce-
ment by Sidney Kwestel,
president of the Orthodox
Union, the overall theme of
the four day gathering is,
"The Challenge of Freedom:
A Time to Be Silent, A Time
to Speak Out."
For further information,
contact the Orthodox Union
Convention Coordinator, Cha-

va Pechter, 45 W. 36th Street,
New York, N.Y. 10018, or call
(212) 563-4000.
