whether in the guise of
patriotism, of fighting crime,
or of acceding to the will of a
religious majority, all are part
of an ever-present trend that
threatens our religious and
cultural identity and
freedom.
Similarly, there will likely
be significant differences in
the types of people each can-
didate would appoint to the
U.S. Supreme Court in terms
of whether the appointees
would zealously guard these
liberties. It is in our interest
to vote for people who would
help ensure the preservation
of these safeguards. Michael
Dukakis clearly emerges as
the presidential candidate
whose positions are most in
accord with this goal. This -is
vital to us as Jews, as we
know all too well where
abuses of governmental
power can eventually lead.

'Old Nazis' Report
Is TVoubling
Your Page 1 article of Oct.
14 on the "Old Nazis" report
brought up an issue that has
been very troubling to me:
the lack of Jewish outrage
over the revelations of Nazis
and Nazi sympathizers in im-
portant positions in the Bush
campaign.
When the Rev. Jesse
Jackson made an anti-
Semitic remark there was no
end of response. Compared to
Jackson, what is going on in
the Bush campaign is off the
scale in seriousness. We are
talking about people who ac-
tively supported the an-
nihilation of European Jewry,
who are unrepentant about
the Holocaust and continue
to regard Jews as the enemy,
having an active role in
the Republican presidential
campaign.
This is something that
should terrify us because if
George Bush is elected, these
are people who are going to be
in positions of influence.
The resignation of eight
members of the Republican
Party Heritage Groups was
forced by the report of an in-
dependent watchdog group.
The Republican response, as
demonstrated in your article,
was to deny and ridicule the
findings in that report and
blame the resignations on a
propaganda campaign by the
Democratic Party. What does
this say about what we can
expect for Republican Party
responsiveness to anti-
Semitism within its ranks
when there is no pressure
from an ongoing election?
What can we expect from
George Bush as an in-
dividual? When it was
reported that Fred Malek, his
appointee as deputy chair-
man of the GOP National
Committee, had complied
with Nixon's witch-hunt of
Jews during the latter's ad-
ministration, Bush praised
Malek as an honorable man
who was only doing an
unpleasant job. This is not the
response of a person sensitive
to the concerns of the Jewish
people. This is not a campaign
or candidate which Jews of
any conscience can support.
Or have we forgotten that this
is how things begin — with a
few extremists with power in
high places and slience and
compliance by the rest?

There Is Comfort
In Prayer
For the past month, I have
been attending the daily mor-
ning minyan at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek. I am usually
one of two women in a group
of 20 or more men .. .
The effect of the experience
is worth the difficulty of ris-
ing early and contending
with rush hour traffic. There
is such a warm camaraderie
among the men worshipping
together. There is such pride
in belonging to a people who
have fervent faith and hope
despite and because of their
shared tragedies. There is
such comfort in prayer.
The minyan includes people
of all ages, but only a few
women. It is an inspiring way
to start the day. More women
should try it.

Largest Foreign
Participant
Tel Aviv (JTA) — The gran-
ting of a $160 million
research and development
contract makes Israel the
largest foreign participant in
the American Strategic
Defense Initiative, the so-
called Star Wars program, ac-
cording to SDI director Lt.
Gen. James Abrahamson.
Speaking at a Defense
Ministry-sponsored U.S.-
Israeli Defense Industry Con-
ference Monday, Abrahamson
said the award was "a clear
testament" to Israel's advanc-
ed technological base.
The grant is for research in-
volving the Arrow anti-
tactical ballistic missile,
which is designed to destroy
incoming medium-range
ballistic missiles at their
highest point in flight.
