of thing. It's a cameo but a lit-
tle gem. My song, "One More
Kiss," is a lovely song,
remembering what i1 had
been like. It's done with a
young counterpart. We're on
stage together but don't see
each other. There's that con-
nection between the young
and old, a lovely concept."
Charles Abbott, Broadway
actor and the director of
Follies praises Benyas, who
was in Michigan Opera
Theatre's My Fair Lady in
1986, for her "wonderful
soprano voice." He mentions
the fact that this is a different
kind of a role for her. "The
warm, loving Heidi Schiller is
a woman about 15 or 20 years
older than Shirley. There is a
lot of schmaltz and gesticulat-
ing required. Shirley does
more of this than she or her
directors would want her to in
her usual opera roles."
In Weinberg, who traveled
to India in 1959 to perform in
the American National The-
atre Association's Oedipus
Rex, Abbot discovered just the
vocal style he was looking for.
"As Solange LaFitte, Henri-
etta is very warm, doing
character work for us. I need-
ed almost a female Maurice
Chevalier."
"I'm an actress who sort of
sings, very often talks her
numbers with, I hope, much
enthusiasm, feeling and sen-
sitivity," says Weinberg. "Do-
ing Solange LaFitte in Follies
is the sort of thing I have
longed to do since 1982 when
I began acting after an
18-year hiatus. Most of the
roles I've done have (involved)
many of life's (more serious)
problems. Now I can flounce
around the Fisher stage with
a feather boa and a French ac-
cent. Solange was in the 1934
Follies. She is very, very
French and very aware that
she looks too good to be 66
years old."
According to director Abbot,
Weinberg has the necessary
pizazz for the role, just as
Benyas is so right as the
retired opera star. He points
out that there were two audi-
tions for the show in Detroit
a month apart and during
that month there were audi-
tions in other parts of the
country.
At the same time, Benyas
and Weinberg are impressed
with Abbott, the cast and the
big-name stars they are work-
ing with, like Edie Adams,
Juliet Prowse and Nancy
Dussault.
"You go out to lunch with
them. It's not New York ac-
tors versus Detroit actors. It's
not playing against each
other but working together,
an ensemble," Benyas said.
