Israeli Researcher
Makes AIDS Promise

DANNY RASKIN

Local Columnist

I

nteresting to note that
according to Meir Shin-
itsky of the Weizmann In-
stitute in Israel, there may be
a cure for AIDS within the
next five years . . . Don't know
of any disease researcher that
has made a definite claim like
this . . . He is working with
Dr. Zvi Bentwich of the
Kaplan Institute in Israel.
So the bottom of March of
Dimes letterheads will have
to be changed . . . regarding it
being the only organization to
cure a disease (think about
that).
On a • shoestring budget,
Bentwich and colleagues
developed several drugs
which have been found to in-
hibit the spread of AIDS in
patients . . . One was suc-
cessfully tested do many U.S.
AIDS victims who came to
him for help . . . Due to lack
of funds, he sold the rights to
an American pharmaceutical
firm two years ago.
Helping him with his work
the friends of Kaplan Medical
Center are expecting about
2,000 people at $50 each for
their benefit on behalf of
AIDS research at Kaplan In-
stitute . . . Co-sponsored by
Michigan Opera Theatre,
"Broadway Night at The
Fisher" is Nov. 14 . . . The
evening's program, featuring
a strolling gourmet gala in
the lobby, as well over 20 area
restaurants chip in with some
delicious goodies . . . followed
by selections from Pirates of
Penzance performed by stars
of the show being presented
here by M.O.T. . . . Finale will
be a fashion extravaganza by
Leah Marks . . . with Bricker-
Tunis Furs, Kosins Clothes,
Ray & Ida's, Tappers,
Mariomax, D.O.C. Optique,
and Tamara Institute de
Beaute . . . For deductible
ticket info, call Barbara
Cohen, 967-4720.
I DO DEPT. . . . Arlene
Rome engaged to Aron
Kominars for a Sept. 3, 1989
middle-aisle session . . . Nor-
ma Steinik, now living in
New Jersey, engaged to Dr.
Michael Dworkin, also of N.J.,
for a March 1989 wedding
here at Congregation Beth
Achim . . . Michelle Poland
and Jeff Boorstein have a
husband-and-wife date for
June 20 . . . Rhonda Verona is
engaged to David Tyner with
sights on a lucky April 1 mar-
riage . . . Paul Verona and
Julie Adell have their big
date set for Nov. 19 .
THEY'LL DO IT again .. .

.

another super duper Nor-
thern and Central High Reu-
nion of years back . . . No
date set yet, but talk is of
next June . . . First planning
committee is Oct. 21 for
noon lunch at Kerby's, 10
Mile and Northwestern .. .

Michlin, temporary chair-
man, 626-1570.

anne and Richard Silberman

night Madness Sale will be

of the store, Donna Apple and
Elaine Rosenblatt . . . with
food, clowns, etc.

visit in Tamarack, Fla., don't
expect to find Helen and Sam
Wiener at home . . . They're
probably on the golf course
. . . There's Lite Dining now

Lake Road and 12 Mile .. .
