Three board members said
they received a confidential
memo in the mail from Thal
which informed them of the
call from Italy. Board
members said Thal also re-
quested special committee
sessions before the Monday
meeting to discuss ways to
present the situation to the
board on Monday.
Initial word of Shapiro's
decision not to renew his con-
tract came as a surprise to
hospital officials and board
members. Several credit
Shapiro with economically
reshaping the hospital.
"I feel very badly that he
resigned," said Dr. Jerrold
Weinberg, a trustee and staff
physician. "Things finally are
starting to take an upturn."
Said board member Richard
Sloan, -"Irving Shapiro is a
very capable man and his
resignation would hurt the
hospital. He seems to have
taken Sinai on a road to
recovering its economic
health and morale."
Trustee Vice President
Merle Harris said the
hospital would suffer a loss if
Shapiro departs, but added,
"It's always a loss when the
top head leaves an institu-
tion. We would just keep on
going."

German Group
Is Tax Exempt

New York (JTA) — The Na-
tional Jewish Commission on
Law and Public Affairs
recently began investigating
a decision by the Internal
Revenue Service to grant tax
exemption to a group that
denies the Holocaust existed.
While the organization, the
Washington-based German
American Information and
Education Association, cites
its objective as the restoration
of Germanic influence in the
United States, its newsletters
focus on refuting the fact of
the Holocaust.
"They essentially took the
position that all allegations
about the Holocaust are a
manifestation of interna-
tional Zionism," said Alan
Mond, managing director of
COLPA.
"They claim it is impossible
to kill so many in that span
of time," Mond added. The
newsletters also include
statistics to support their
claims.
Based upon their findings,
COLPA attorneys will deter-
mine whether there are
grounds for challenging the
group's tax exemption.
