More Israelis
Favor Talking

New York — While the ma-
jority of the Israeli public
favors strong measures to con-
tain the excesses of the
Palestinian uprising, "the
percentage of Israelis favor-
ing negotiations with the
Palestinians has risen to new
heights." That is one of the
key conclusions reported in a
survey of recent trends and
current issues in Israel
prepared by Israeli pollster
Hanoch Smith for the inter-
national relations depart-
ment of the American Jewish
Committee.
The survey findings are con-
tained in a booklet, released
today, titled "The 1988
Knesset Elections: Recent
Trends and Current Issues."
Conducted in June 1988, the
survey indicated that in
response to the statement,
"The time has come to talk
with the Palestinians," 62
percent of the Israelis polled
responded favorably.
New salience to the need for
dealing with the Palestinians
has been given both by the
uprising and by King Hus-
sein's disengagement from
the affairs of the West Bank.
While a majority (53 percent
of the Jewish sample) still op-
pose a Palestinian state, 39
percent said they would be
willing to accept a Palesti-
nian state in the territories
"if Israel's security is
assured."
In earlier polls some 40-45
percent of the Israelis ques-
tioned indicated they would
support Israel's talking with
the Palestine Liberation
Organization "if the PLO
recognized Israel and re-
nounced terrorism."
However, in the June 1988
poll, a majority of the Israelis
questioned approved Israel's
speaking with the PLO — pro-
vided that the PLO met these
conditions of co-existence,
recognition, and renunciation
of terrorism.
