— Israel protecting Kuwait in
exchange for oil, Marrou said.
"It seems like a perfect
match that would result in
real cooperation, instead of a
big peace treaty signing affair
where all the people have
their pictures taken with
their arms around each other
and drink champagne."
Marrou said he does not
believe the United States
should have treaties except
with "proven allies" like
Israel and France and said
the Soviet threat has been
greatly exaggerated.
"The real threat from
Russia is much less than
we've been led to believe," he
said. "What happened to
them in Afghanistan is proof
of that. They're not good at
fighting people. They're just
good at scaring people."
While its platform is clear-
cut on stopping U.S. foreign
aid and legalizing drugs, the
Libertarian Party is less
precise on abortion, Marrou
said.
A
spokesman
in
Washington explained that
members of the Libertarian
Party are both pro-choice and
anti-abortion, but said the
party's basic premise is that
abortion is an issue that
should be left to individuals
and not the government.
Marrou said he is opposed
to abortion, but that he
doesn't believe his opinion
should be forced on others. He
said adoption should be made
easier and a development on
a "morning after pill"
hastened.
While Marrou admits that
chances are slim for a Liber-
tarian victory in 1988, he said
that he and Ron Paul do not
intend to throw their support
behind either Bush or
Dukakis because "we oppose
Republicans and Democrats."
Instead, they intend to cam-
paign for the future. "Sooner
or later we're going to elect
our first congressman," he
said. "And then we'll have our
first senator and then, our
first president."

Oratorio Marks
Kristallnacht

New York — An oratorio
commemorating the 50th an-
niversary of Kristallnacht
will premiere simultaneously
in 12 cities throughout the
United States Nov. 9, the date
of the massive destruction of
Jewish synagogues and pro-
perty in Nazi Germany.
On Kristallnacht — the
"Night of the Broken Glass,"
Nov. 9, 1938 — nearly 300

synagogues and hundreds of
Jewish-owned businesses
throughout the German
Reich were desecrated, burn-
ed and destroyed.
The oratorio, titled "Stars
in the Dust," was commission-
ed by Congregation Beth
Sholom of Long Beach and
Lido, N.Y. It will be sung in
English and beamed
throughout the world by the
Voice of America, according to
Cantor Solomon Mendelson,
cantor of Beth Sholom and
producer of the memorial
work. The VOA will translate
the text of the oratorio into 42
languages, he noted. Cantor
Mendelson, who has served
the Long Island congregation
for the last 35 years, is presi-
dent of the Cantors Assembly,
the world's largest body of
cantors.
"Stars in the Dust" will be
performed on Nov. 9 in the
following communities:
Atlanta, Ga.; Baltimore, Md.;
Columbus, Ohio; Danbury,
Conn.; Des Moines, Iowa;
Houston, Texas; Long Beach,
N.Y.; Newton Center, Mass.;
Philadelphia, Pa.; Rochester,
N.Y.; St. Louis, Mo.; South
Orange, N.J.

Ph.D. Awarded

of Brandeis University, who
has twice been awarded the
Pulitzer Prize for his repor-
ting from the Middle East for

9 as the university celebrates
its 40th anniversary at a

Executions
Shock AJC

New York — The American
Jewish Committee, asserting
that the execution of criminal
offenders under the age of 18
"shocks the conscience" and
"violates contemporary stan-
dards of decency," has joined
with other religious groups in
a brief amici curiae in the
United States Supreme
Court, urging a reversal of
two state court decisions im-
posing the death penalty on
minors.
In High v. Kemp, the peti-
tioner was one month away
from his 18th birthday at the
time of his offenses. The state
of Georgia, where the crimes
were committed, has a
minimum age of 17 for impos-
ing the death penalty.
In Wilkins v. Missouri, the
death penalty was imposed on
a defendant who was 16 years
old at the time of the crime
