The creative use of limited community resources al-
ways poses, an enormous challenge to the hundreds of
volunteers and professional staff of Federation, its
agencies and other beneficiaries. Needs change, but
they rarely disappear.
So the development of financial resources becomes
vital to meet our community's current and future respon-
sibilities. At nearly $26 million, our Campaign achieve-
ment this year was cited as one of the finest in the
nation. It enabled Federation to support the operation-
al needs of its local agencies, three day schools, three
campus Hillel centers and more than 40 national and
overseas agencies that sustain and enrich the quality
of life for Jews across the nation and around the world.
In particular, our Campaign share to the national
United Jewish Appeal bespoke a partnership of half a
century. Ever since Kristallnacht of November 1938
and the beginning of that dark chapter in Jewish history,
we have helped the UJA support the rescue and re-
habilitation of millions of lives in Israel and 33 other
nations. This year, our share was $13.6 million, plus
$200,000 for Project Renewal.
But the Campaign, as successful as it is, can't do it all.
There are also innovative agency and synagogue pro-
grams that regular budgets can't provide. Special, un-
anticipated needs, like an influx of Russian Jews.
Emergencies, like a financial burden on the commu-
nity's home for the aged. Start-up costs for a new com-
munity-sponsored apartment building. And home-
buyer assistance loans through a neighborhood en-
hancement project.
Our oldest agency, United Jewish Charities, and the
Federated Endowment Fund helped us meet such
community responsibilities this year. As one example,
more than $230,000 was distributed to a number of
projects by UJC's Max M. Fisher Jewish Community
Foundation.
Through the generosity of endowment donors and the
foresight of our finance committees, Federation was
able to extend its reach of service.
