In conjunction with HIAS, the interna-
tional Jewish immigrant aid organization,
Resettlement Service provides housing
and other assistance to new immigrants
settling in the Detroit area. In addition, it
coordinates Federation agency programs
designed to help newcomers.

Service, the Jewish House of Shelter offers
temporary housing to transients and
homeless persons.

Jewish Federation Apartments

Sinai Hospital is a 615-bed major health
care facility which offers both primary
care and medically advanced specialty
services. Nearly 20,000 patients are ad-
mitted every year. The hospital occupies
a 36-acre site in northwest Detroit. Sinai
Health Services also operates five health
care centers.

Prentis Towers and Hechtman Apartments
accommodate older adults on modest in-
comes who are able to function indepen-
dently and maintain their own living
quarters. Activities and day programs are
offered on site and at the nearby Jewish
Community Centers. Another structure
is being built on the Oak Park campus.

Executive Director

UHS offers Jewish educational opportu-
nities for all ages, including nursery school
(in partnership with several area syna-
gogues), afternoon classes and Hebrew
High School. Classes for hearing impair-
ed and handicapped children are available.
The Midrasha, College of Jewish Studies
offers formal adult education, including
Hebrew language and courses in Judaica.

Midrasha

The Home provides residential care for
older adults requiring assistance. Resi-
dents at Borman Hall and Prentis Manor
• receive medical care, therapy and nursing
supervision. Fleischman Residence was
created for those who do not require nurs-
ing care. Fees are based on ability to pay.
Day care services are also available.

Secretary

United Jewish Charities manages com-
munal properties and financial resources,
including endowment and trust funds.
Earnings generated by invested assets are
distributed for a wide range of charitable
purposes.
