U.S. Student
Enrollment Up

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A record
number of American students
will attend Tel Aviv Univer-
sity's overseas student pro-
gram this year, the universi-
ty announced Tuesday.
It said the enrollment was
up more than 30 percent over
1987, despite the Palestinian
uprising and general fall-off
of tourism.
A total of 150 Americans
will participate in the fall
1988 semester and the
1988-89 full-year program.

Blood Drive

Continued from Page 5

The family also will accept
financial contributions either
during the drive at the Birm-
ingham Temple or through
the Detroit-based "Life for
Brandon" fund. The non-
profit organization was
established for a Jewish child
with CML.
The drive is the latest in a
series of attempts by the Jan-
nett family to help Ira.
Immediately after Ira's
leukemia was diagnosed,
members of his family took
the blood test to see if they
could serve as donors. None
matched.-
Mrs. Jannett said the
chances of finding someone
with a compatible bone mar-
row type are about one in
15,000.
His family then added Ira's
name to the National Bone
Marrow Registry. With inter-
national offices, including
branches in the United
States, England, Israel and
Canada, the registry lists the
bone marrow types of those
needing the marrow and
potential donors.
So far, they have not been
able to make a match.
"There are people (on the
registry) who've waited as
long as five years for a
match," she said. "Five years
is the longest you can wait.
After that, there's not much
hope."
Ira, meanwhile, is in remis-
sion at a hospital in Houston.
A Detroit-area native and
member of the Birmingham
Temple, Ira ran the family
furniture business until he
became too sick to work, Mrs.
Jannett said.
Mrs. Jannett said her son is
in "great spirits" but added,
"he does get discouraged?'
"In the beginning, we
thought finding a donor
would be so simple," she said.
"We never dreamed it could
take so long?'
