BACKGROUND: Jacqueline Miller Woolf
grew up in the Dexter area and moved
to northwest Detroit when she was a
teenager. She gradauted from Mumford
High School in 1956.
She and her husband Elroy were high
school sweethearts. "I got my
engagement ring on the night of the
senior prom. The ring was in my
corsage box."
As a couple, they were active in the
formative years of the Birmingham
Temple. She was a former teacher and
principal at the temple, while he is a
past president. Woolf also sings in the
choir and at services. "I was the first
woman in the Detroit area to sing Kol
Nidre at a holiday service."
Her career as an artist began when
she entered Wayne State University and
studied art. She graduated in art
education and taught as a permanent
substitute in Detroit for seven years.
While raising her children, she was
always painting. In the beginning of her
career, she painted murals and even
shoes to match clothing, but later began
to specialize in water color.
Her works have been in many local
galleries and juried exhibitions. Many of
her water color paintings are in
corporate offices. Three of her paintings
were in Henry Ford II's suite of offices
at the Renaissance Center.
After painting for almost 30 years,
Woolf decided to make a career change.
"I felt the need to make a change, but I
wanted to use my hands." After hearing
about make-up artists trained to
camouflage scars and disfigurements,
Woolf decided to learn the technique
because she could use her artistic
talent. After taking some classes, she
began her new career as a corrective
make-up consultant. In the past six
months, she has helped many people
learn to apply make-up to conceal scars,
bruises, surgical procedures and other
skin problems.
Woolf is proud that she has helped
many people gain confidence. One man
with scars on his leg wore shorts for the
first time since World War II, while a
burn victim felt confident going to
work.
Woolf mentions the quote by the
French writer Jean Cocteau: "A defect
in the soul cannot be corrected on the
face, but a defect on the face, if
corrected, can correct a soul."
