this [Hofmann] case, the
Mark Hofmann documents, I
would have been absolutely
certain that the [Trawnicki]
I.D. card was a genuine card.
Knowing what I now know
has certainly affected the way
I look at these types of
documents.
"We would all like to
believe that there would be
clues that would be readily
discernable to a document ex-
aminer, but as you'll see, if so-
meone has access to the right
ink, the right papers, and
someone can do a fair job of
forging signatures, then there
is an impact that extends
beyond this [Hofmann] case."
I don't know how to put that
comment any more clearly. It
does not amount to a state-
ment that the Trawnicki
card was genuine, as Mr. Sher
misrepresented .. .
A tape of the statement was
sent, without my knowledge,
to the Demjanjuk prosecution
in Jerusalem, where without
notice to me, it was presented
at trial as if it were contrary
to my testimony there.
In actuality, my statement
to the SWAFDE conference
supports my conclusion that
the Trawnicki I.D. was forged.
Many of the forensic ex-
aminations which were used
to "prove" the Hofmann
documents "authentic" (when
they were actually forgeries)
were used in the Demjanjuk
case to "prove" the Trawnicki
I.D. card "genuine."
The Trawnicki I.D. card is
not an instance of the foren-
sic ink and paper analysts be-
ing wrong. It is a case of the
forger using genuine old ink
and paper and a forged Dem-
janjuk signature to create a
false I.D. card for Demjanjuk
