Eilat Mirrors

E

uropeans have been
streaming to Eilat for
years. North
Americans have yet to
discover . what is sure to
become the Riviera of the
Middle East.
Its physical beauty, its pro-
ximity to historical sites, its
climate and myriad outdoor
activities have already made
Eilat a favorite spot for
Israelis and for travelers from
many corners of the world.
Surrounded by mountains
and situated on the seashore,
the city is in a feverish state
of construction. Building goes
on everywhere, it seems, and
the finished products are
striking in their beauty and
originality.
According to Eilat's mayor,
Raft Hochman, the city is
making every effort to put the
tourist first, with high stan-
dards of service and careful
control of prices.
Eilat, it appears, attracts
tourists of all ages. There is
no generation gap here.
Seniors, yuppies, students
and families all seem to mix,
and to enjoy this casual,
easygoing resort town. No one
is in a hurry.
Eilat is now a Free Trade
Zone, which means lower
prices for goods and services.
There is no value-added tax
charge either, and many of
the stores are duty-free.
Eilat has virtually no rain
in the winter. It rains about
six to eight days between
November and April. The
water and air temperature is
in the mid-20s (75 degrees).
Eilat's only five-star hotel,
at nearby Taba, boasts every
amenity. But the four-star
hotels are luxurious too. For
