BACKGROUND: Sharon Bader Lipton
grew up in northwest Detroit attending
42
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 1988
Pasteur Elementary School and
graduating from Mumford High School
in 1964.
During her youth, her parents were
active in the community. "My mother
was active in Hadassah and PTO. I grew
up seeing this as a background in my
home," she recalls.
She describes her family as very close
and remembers many family vacations
and activities. She credits her parents
with instilling strong Jewish values in
the family. As a teenager she was
involved with youth groups and was
confirmed at Shaarey Zedek.
While attending the University of
Michigan she became active in college
organizations. Lipton was the senior
editor of the Mighigan yearbook. After
graduation from U-M, she became a
special education teacher in
Birmingham.
In 1972, she married Jeffrey and they
moved to Boston where he continued his
practice. In Boston she worked as a
volunteer for the Jewish Historical
Society on a national synagogue exhibit.
She also set up a tutorial program in
Belmont, Mass., for learning disabled
students.
They moved back to Detroit in 1974
and began raising a family. She took up
weaving as a hobby. She wove pillows,
wall hangings and talleisim.
Lipton also became active in many
Jewish organizations. "It has given me
a lot of self-satisfaction!' While serving
on many boards of organizations, her
interest in education remained strong.
She is currently serving a four-year
term on the West Bloomfield Board of
Education. Her previous positions
during this term include vice president
and secretary. This is the last year of
her term.
Lipton is quick to add that she is not
the star of the Board of Education.
"This is a group of seven people!" She is
extremely proud of the fact that the
school district believes in quality and -
equity for all students on all levels and
that the district has received national
awards.
When her term expires, Lipton wants
to be re-elected. "I'm probably going to
run again to have a say and give
something back to the community in
which I live!'
