was excoriated in the international press, typified by this editorial
cartoon by Paul Conrad in the Los Angeles Times.

`THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST' was the focus of intense controversy when the Martin Scorsese
film opened this summer despite widespread protests and boycotts from Christian fundamentalists, some of
whom sought to blame Jewish businessmen for the film's release. William Dafoe portrayed a very human
Jesus.
