Mondry Makes
Amateur Cut

Josh Mondry shot a one-
under-par 141 at the U.S.
Amateur Golf Championship
in Hot Springs, Va., last week,
earning a spot in the 64-man
match play field. Mondry
then lost his first match.
Mondry, who played in the
tournament last year but
missed the cut by one stroke,
has made a mini-comeback
since returning from New
York in the spring of 1987.
Mondry attended Stanford
on a golf scholarship for three
years, then gave up his
scholarship before his senior
season. "I got a little tired of
it," he explains. "At Stanford
it was every day, all year,
because of the weather . . . I
wanted to get a little more
out of school, enjoy my social
life more."
Mondry says he enjoys com-
petitive golf as an individual,
but not on a team level.
After spending a year and-
a-half in New York, Mondry
began playing in Michigan
tournaments and a few na-
tional amateur events. "I
think that's the way I'll keep
it the rest of my life" says
Mondry, who is attending
Northwestern's Kellogg
business school. "I think I'm
getting better every year and
that makes it more en-
joyable."
Mondry will finish school
next June and plans to move
into the family business,
Highland Appliance, where
he hopes to do "a little bit of
everything" while still fin-
ding time for selected golf
tournaments.
