university admission; 26,000
students who complete the
bagrut each year compete for
the 14,000 freshman seats in
all of the country's universi-
ties. Thus, some students end
up in teaching seminaries or
vocational schools.
Unlike the U.S., practically
no one applies to university in
their senior year of high
school. They have at least
three years of military service
to complete before then.
There is one exception. The
army needs trained people in
medicine, dentistry, com-
puters and electronics and
through an atuda, or aca-
demic program, some high
school graduates complete
their studies before doing
their military service.
Because they are older,
Israeli freshman tend to be
more serious • students than
American students. "Visiting
professors from the U.S. say
that in terms of motivation
and maturity, the difference
is remarkable," says Pur.
"But they are unable to
devote themselves fully to
their studies. Many are mar-
ried, and they also have their
term disrupted by military
reserve duty."
The Israeli school system .
has played a vital role in
changing society. In the
1950s, it helped absorb more
than a million immigrants
from Yemen, Iraq and Mor-
occo. And it has continued to
be in the front lines in the
battle to erase the gap bet-
ween Sephardim and
Ashkenazim.
One problem that still baf-
fles educators is secular-
Orthodox division. "We have
a hard time bringing the two
together in school programs.
The Orthodox are afraid of
dialogue for fear that their
kids will be exposed to heret-
ical ideas, and the secular are
afraid their kids will be brain-
washed," says Pur.
Though no one has a solu-
tion to the problem, it is
almost certain to be found
through the schools. "Good
education prepares a student
to distinguish between good
and bad," says Pur. "In the
schools, we present the dilem-
mas and explain that each
alternative has a price —
whether it is the transfer of
the Palestinians from the
country, or a return to the
pre-1967 border — there is a
price to pay." ❑
