said that they use travel time
to be close. In The Working
Mother's Complete Handbook
(New American Library),
Gloria Norris and Jo Ann
Miller point out that when a
mother takes the child to
school or picks her up at the
end of the day, the two have
a splendid chance to relate to
one another without all those
outside distractions getting in
the way.
Whether or not mothers
choose to work outside the
home clearly says nothing
about the degree of their
parental involvement. One
mother, for example, told me
that she makes sure each
morning to slip loving
messages in her children's
lunch bags for them to
discover during the day.
Others use the telephone
liberally to convey their
uninterrupted devotion. The
bottom line is still what it
always was: to care deeply --
and to seize every opportuni-
ty to let the child know it.

W
hile the "Jewish
mother" is thought
of as a throwback —
a kind of living anachorism —
the "Jewish father" is, on the
other hand, a very new breed.
The new fathers — the nur-
turant, involved, demonstra-
tive fathers who share in
child care and play — are to-
day's counterparts of the
"Jewish mother."
Not too many years ago,
however, a good father was
viewed as being quite dif-

ferent. He was regarded as
the provider of the family's
financial, not emotional,
security. In Margaret Mead's
words, human fatherhood was
"a social invention," the pur-
pose of which was to provide
females and their young with
food. That, of course, is no
longer a tenable view, as the
lives of countless families to-
day make abundantly clear.
Here is what psychological
studies show:
• A father can help create
the early bonds of love and at-
tachment with infants that
traditionally were reserved
only for the mother.
• Newborns show no consis-
tent prefernce for mothers

over fathers. Just who it is
that holds, feeds, and
stimulates the baby is less
important than whether
these needs are consistently
met.
• How much and how well
fathers interact with their
children significantly affects
the children's intellectual and
emotional development. A
father's inadequacy or
unavailability can help erode
the child's well-being, just as
his presence and healthy par-
ticipation can promote it.
While it is true enough that
fathers and mothers often dif-
fer in their styles of interac-
tion with children, the basic
qualities of child rearing
discussed in this article are
unrelated to gender.

Other School
Systems
The vast majority of Israel's
1.2 million elementary and
high school students attend
the public school system —
Mamlachti (State) and
Mamlachti Date (State
religious).
But there are at least two
other schciol systems that the
ultra-Orthodox attend.
Hinuch Atzma'i, run by
Agudat Yisrael, holds
separate classes for boys and
girls, and provides no secular
education to boys after the
eighth grade.
Some of the Chassidic
groups like Satmar and Belz
run their own schools and
often stop secular studies
even earlier.
Some of the public schools
are actually semi-private.
Parents pay an additional
monthly fee for extra hours of
learning in school. This is
known as "gray education."
