Histadrut
Agrees To
Wage Pact
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Histadrut
and Finance Ministry repre-
sentatives last week signed a
two-year wage public sector
wage and employment
agreement.
The accord calls for an 11
percent pay hike over the
next two years. The current
six-day 45-hour work week
will be replaced by a 42-and-
a-half hour five-day work
week.
Histradut, the trades union
federation, agreed to forfeit
the shorter hours worked in
summer in order to equalize
the number of hours worked
each week throughout the
year.
However, leaders of the
three unions of professionals
— engineers, technicians and
the union of social science
and humanities graduates —
refused to sign the accord,
saying the clauses in the
agreement concerning gov-
ernment industrial corpora-
tions were unacceptable.
Meeting

American envoy Richard
Murphy and a group of
Palestinians was cancelled,
and the blame is being laid on
the Palestine Liberation
Organization by American
and Palestinian observers.
Murphy, assistant secretary
of state for Near Eastern and
South Asian affairs, visited
Cairo as part of a diplomatic
mission that included meet-
ings last week in Amman,
Beirut and Jerusalem.
He was scheduled to meet
with representatives from the
administered territories as
part of a United States effort
to reach out to Palestinians,
who say they have been ex-
cluded from American peace
initiatives in the region.
The collapse of the sched-
uled meeting was attributed
to disagreement between the
