Hillel Unveils
New Series

Hill Street Forum/B'nai
B'rith Hillel Foundation at
the University of Michigan
has announced its 1988-1989
Celebration of Jewish Arts
and Great Writers series.
Songwriter Marvin Ham-
lisch will perform at 8 p.m.
Sept. 28 at Hill Auditorium.
The Yoram Boker Mime

Troupe of Israel will perform
Oct. 22 in the Lydia
Mendelssohn Theater.
Celebration will feature
poet, psychotherapist, and
educator Julie Heifetz Jan. 21
at the new B'nai B'rith Hillel
Foundation building. Heifetz
will present dramatic
readings of her poetry, some
based on oral histories by
Holocaust survivors and
liberators.
On Nov. 15, Anne Roiphe,
author of Generation Without
Memory, and Up The Sand-
box, kicks off the Great
Writers series at 8 p.m. in
Green Auditorium. Her latest
is Lovingkindness.
Julius Lester will appear on
Feb. 7 in Green Auditorium.
His latest book, Lovesong,
Becoming a Jew, documents
his journey from his
childhood as a Methodist
minister's son to black power
politics in the '60s to Catholic
mysticism and finally to his
conversion to Judaism.
Poet Yehuda Amichai will
appear on March 25 in Green
Auditorium. He is the author
of seven books of poetry and
has written plays for radio
and stage, two novels and one
book of short stories.

Oct. 1), Ann Arbor, or by call-

SILVERFARBS DONATE SECOND AMBULANCE
TO ISRAEL MAGEN DAVID ADOM

At a recent dedication ceremony a fully equipped am-
bulance was donated to Magen David Adom (MDA),
Israel's Emergency Medical, Ambulance, Blood and
Disaster Servie by Grant and Betty Silverfarb. This gift was
made in honor of the Valiant Defense Forces.
The Pikuach Nefesh ("Saving Lives") Award was presented
to Silverfarbs by Dr. Harold Maxmen, treasurer of the
Michigan Region, ARMDI "in recognition of their outstanding
contribution of a lifesaving ambulance and for helping
MDA bring the hope of a brighter future to Israel's ailing,
injured, aged and newborn."
Betty and Grant Silverfarb, community leaders and philan-
thropists, are active on behalf of numerous local and Israeli
causes. They both serve on the Board of Directors of the
Michigan Region, American Red Magen David for Israel
and play important roles in the chapter's activities.
Presenting the Award to Silverfarbs Drs. Mames and Max-
men remarked: Your magnificent generosity once again
demonstrates your love, compassion and profound concern
for our beleagured brethren in Israel. Only with a sustain-
ed support of dedicated, wonderful friends like yourselves
MDA will be able to continue the vital missions of mercy."
American Red Magen David for Israel in addition to am-
bulances provides funds for the new Israel's National Blood
Bank and Fractionation Center in Ramat Gan, Paramedics
Training Program, Emergency Medical Stations, Leukemia
and Hemophiliac Services and other needs.

GOTTLIEB RECEIVES
PIKUACH NEFESH AWARD

At a recent dedication ceremony a fully equipped am-

Israel's Emergency Medical, Abulance Blood and Disaster
Service by Reuven Gottlieb. Mr. Gottlieb made this gift in
cherished memory of his parents Jacob Joshua and Asne
Michle Gottlieb, sisters Rivkah Leah Berman, Anna Libby
Cohen, Taubi Smolinsky, Chaya Shifra Elson and oldest
brother Louis Gottlieb.
Presenting the Pikuach Nefesh Award ("Saving Lives") Rab-
bi Reuven Drucker of Congregation Young Israel of Green-
field and Dr. John J. Mames, chairman of the Michigan
Region American Red Magen David for Israel (ARMDI) laud-
ed Mr. Gottlieb for his outstanding generosity which will assist
MDA in the humanitarian and lifesaving missions. "You may
derive great satisfaction in the knowledge that the names
of your late parents, sisters and brother will be linked with
the noble and vital programs of Magen David Adom,"
remarked Dr. Mames.
