played in the girls 16.
The players qualified for the
Western tournaments
through their play in the
Southeast Michigan district
tournament. "Just getting in-
to that (Western) tournament
is a pretty good feat," accor-
ding to Franklin Racquet
Club professional Jon Fischer.
Earlier this month, Miller
played in the United States
Tennis Association (USTA)
boys 12 hardcourt champion-
ships in Corpus Christi,
Thxas, reaching the top 24. He
will play in the boys 12
claycourt championships in
Winston-Salem, N.C., next
week, and the boys 12 na-
tionals in San Diego next
month.
Hoffman and Friedman
both competed in the USTA
boys 14 hardcourt tourney in
San Antonio. They both lost
in the first round, then played
each other in a consolation
match. Friedman won the
three-set match. Hoffman had
previously edged Friedman in
a pair of three-setters earlier
this year.
Hoffman and Friedman will
participate in the boys 14
claycourt tournament in Ft.
Lauderdale, Fla., next week
and the boys 14 nationals in
Shreveport, La., next month.

Franklin Hosts
Regional Tennis

A regional Maccabiah
Games tennis qualifying
tournament is scheduled for
the Franklin Racquet Club,
Aug. 19-21.
The finalists in the men's
and women's singles will
qualify for the U.S. national
qualifying tournament to be
held at the University of
Pennsylvania the weekend of
Jan. 14, 1989. The top six
finishers in the.national tour-
nament — the four semi-
finalists from the main draw
of 32 players, plus the
finalists from the consolation
draw — will make up the U.S.
team for the 13th Maccabiah
Games in Israel, in July.
All Jewish players are eligi-
ble to enter the regional. To
enter, all players must fill out
an official Maccibiah team
application form and a tryout
waiver. The forms, plus an ap-
plication fee, must be receiv-
ed at Franklin by Aug. 15.
Play will be conducted on
indoor, air-conditioned
hardcourts.
For more information on
the regional, call Jon Fischer,

mation, call the U.S. Commit-
tee Sports for Israel,

Maccabi Hoops
Teams Clash

The Detroit and Ann Arbor
Maccabi basketball teams
scrimmaged on Sunday at the
West Bloomfield Jewish Com-
munity Center. Detroit won
both halves as the teams tun-
ed up for the regional youth
games in Chicago next
month.
Jamie Stewart scored 26
points to lead Detroit, which
played without point guard
Matt Hoffman. Hoffman was
attending an All-Star basket-
ball camp.
Darin Rosenberg had 14
points for Detroit while Joey
Hurshe, Darin Frank and
Brad Rosenberg all tallied
ten. Jeff Rosenberg. con-
tributed eight points.
Vaughn Schwartz led Ann
Arbor with 20 points. The 6-7
Schwartz, who will be a junior
at Ann Arbor Huron High
School this fall, earned raves
from Detroit coach Burt
Hurshe.
Hurshe felt Detroit's
defense was strong on Sun-
day. They played both man-to-
man and zone and worked on
their full-court press. He said
the offense did not execute
well in the first half, but add -=
ed that it improved in the se-
cond half. "We've got some
good perimeter shooters,
we've got some penetrators,"
said Hurshe. "And Darin
Frank was rebounding real
well."
Hurshe's squad will get a
stiff test today when they
travel to St. Cecelia's in
Detroit to play the Detroit
Northwestern High School
reserve squad.
