An honor student, Tepper-
man is a member of his
school's tennis and track
teams. He is also editor of the
literary magazine, plays tenor
saxophone in the school's con-
cert and jazz bands and is a
cartoonist and graphic artist
who has had his work
published in Merlin's Pen, a
national literary magazine.
Following their return
home, the fellows will take
part in organized "alumni"
activities, including periodic
reunions and follow-up
seminars on issues of Jewish
concern.
Lieberman Wins
Scholarship
Ronald Jay Lieberman, son
of Dr. and Mrs. David Lieber-
man of West Bloomfield, was
awarded the West Bloomfield
Optimist Club Nerce D. Alix
Scholarship.
He was graduated as
valedictorian of West Bloom-
field High School, where he
was recognized for outstan-
ding achievement by meeting
the standards of the Presiden-
tial Academic Fitness Award.
Ron is past president of the
National Honor Society. He
was Captain of the Wrestling
Team for two years and par-
ticipated on the Forensic
Team. He was selected by the
teachers and counselors for
their Most Representative
Student award. He received a
Certificate of Merit for
outstanding achievement in
the Spanish language, a Cer-
tificate of Recognition from
the State of Michigan Com-
petitive Scholarship Program
and a Certificate of Commen-
dation from the Detroit
Association of Phi Beta Kapa.
Ron was chosen to receive
the James Fink Award for the
most outstanding senior
wrestler and also received the
team's Sportsman Award.
He attended the University
of Michigan Summer Honors
Institute, and The Focus at
Tufts Program. This summer
Ron will spend a month in
Spain as part of the NACEL
cultural exchange program.
He will attend the Universi-
ty of Michigan in the fall.
Michael Mostyn
Dr. Lon Katz was graduated
from Wayne State Universi-
ty's Medical school. Dr. Katz
will serve his internship at
Sinai Hospital in obstetrics
and gynecology.

Sciatica Can Strike
Young & Old Alike

Sciatica, often regarded as an ailment of middle age, can strike
any age group at any time.
It does strike more often among the middle aged, and is more
prevalent among men than women, but it is not uncommon in
young people as well. But no matter the age of its victims, he or
she will surely suffer from the pain.
Since the sciatic nerve bundles are the largest and longest in
the human body, it is not surprising that they are also the most
susceptible to injury. The pain of sciatica may appear anywhere
in the region served by the sciatic nerves, from the hips down
through the legs and even into the feet.
Backache, lumbago or stiffness and muscle
spasms in the low back often precede the onset
of sciatica. Back pain may continue after the
sciatica appears or it may subside. Occasionally
sciatica will develop without any prior symptoms.
The primary cause of sciatica is pressure, ir-
ritation, of or injury to the sciatic nerve. This is
generally caused by one or more of the vertebrae
caused by one or more of the vertebrae in the
spine becoming dislocated. This dislocation, call-
ed a subluxation, causes an interference with the
function of the nerves that pass between the

subluxated vertebrae and its neighbor. Pain or
malfunction of the part of the body served by the affected nerve
is the end result.
Liniments, pain pills, heat applications or ice packs may relieve
the pain of sciatica, but the victim can never count on being rid
of the problem until the underlying cause, the displaced vertebrae,
is corrected. To achieve this correction, more and more people are
turning to the Doctor of Chiropractic. By correcting the spinal
misalignment which has created the pinched nerve condition, he
sets the forces in motion for the body to heal itself from within.
