again, there's a lot of players
in the world. The competition
is fierce."
Savitt, who is modest about
his own accomplishments on
the court, does not root for
any current pros, other than
the Israelis. He likes the top
Swedish players because they
generally have good court
manners. "There's just so few
players today that handle
themselves well on the court
that it's hard, in my opinion,
to root for somebody."
There is little doubt that
many in Israel are rooting for
Dick Sa.vitt in his current ten-
nis endeavor.

ing series, sponsored by the

Brothers Restaurants, runs
its second leg on Thursday.
All three races start at the
Huntington Woods parks and
recreation department on
Scotia and Hart, at 6 p.m.
Thursday's event includes
a three-mile run plus a one-
mile fun run. Awards for the
three-mile run will be
presented to men and women
in six different age catagories.
Fun run awards will go to the
top 20 finishers, top boy and
girl finishers, and the top

Series awards based on per-
formances in all three races
will be presented following
the third race, on July 21, in-
cluding a championship
trophy to the top male and
female finisher. The winner of
each age group for the series
receives a free dinner at Elias
Brothers' Main Event
restaurant in the Pontiac
Silverdome. All entrants who

receive a $5 Elias Brothers
gift book.

Israeli Yacht
Crosses Ocean
Newport, R.I. — The Mac-
cabi, the first Isaeli yacht to
compete in 28 years of the
"Singlehanded Transatlantic
Race," was scheduled to arrive
in Rhode Island in early July
at the completion of the race.
The yacht is sailed by Clive
Shelter, an officer in the
Israeli Merchant Navy. He
and 120 solo yachtsman from
17 countries sailed from
Plymouth, England, to
Newport — a total of 3,300
miles.
Two British benefactors
jointly donated £50,000 to
help purchase the yacht,
which will also figure in
Israel's 40th anniversary
celebration.
The "Maccabi" is a Class V,
32-foot Contessa, which is the
first and only production
yacht to have sailed around
Cape Horn. She is fitted out
specifically for long distance,
singlehanded sailing and is
equipped with a navigational
microprocessor, radar, com-
munication equipment and
satellite navigator.
Clive Shelter was born in
England and emigrated to
Israel in 1971. He joined he
Merchant Navy and began
training as an officer. He is
now a Chief Officer.
Shelter recently completed
a solo 1,800-mile qualifying
sail and also met the
stringent criteria set for the
Singlehanded Transatlantic
Race by its organizers, the
Royal Western Yacht Club.
His acceptance is considered
a major achievement for
Israeli sports.
The Singlehanded Tran-
satlantic Race takes place
every four years, attracting
participants from all over the
world.
