France Erects
Dreyfus Statue
Paris (JTA) — A statue of
Alfred Dreyfus, the Jewish
captain accused of treason
and demoted in 1895 by
French anti-Semitic army of-
ficers, was inaugurated here
by Minister of Culture Jack
Lang. It is the first statue in
France dedicated to the young
officer who inspired Emile
Zola to write his famous
"J'Accuse."
The 10-foot high bronze
statue was erected in the
gardens of the Tuilleries, the
former Louvre Royal Palace,
which is now a world famous
art museum. The large figure
shows Dreyfus in uniform
with a broken sword.
A statue of Leon Blum,
France's late Jewish prime
minister, will be erected fac-
ing the statue of Dreyfus, it
was announced at the cere-
mony last week.
