BACKGROUND: Bill Carroll was born in
Hartford, Conn. He moved to Detroit as
a youngster when his father came to
manage the first Tom's Quality Market,
the precursor to Farmer Jack, at the
request of the founders Tom and Al
Borman. His father was a friend of the
Bormans in Russia.
Carroll lived on Santa Rosa street in
Detroit and was the first Jewish child
on the block. "I was a horrible victim of
anti-Semitism." He recalls being beaten
up after school and suffering, but
instead of running he fought back and
eventually became friends with his
gentile peers.
He attended Hampton, Nolan and
Central High School graduating in
1950. He then entered Wayne State
University majoring in journalism. "I
always wanted to be a writer and was
fascinated with newspapers." Carroll
was the sports editor for the university
newspaper. He went to law school for
one year, but realized journalism was
his love.
Carroll began his journalism career
working for weekly newspapers in
Oakland County for three years. He
then worked for the Royal Oak Tribune
and eventually became city editor.
"There was always some excitement
every day." Some of the major stories he
covered included a phantom sniper in
Royal Oak, the shooting of Rabbi Adler
and Kennedy's campaign stop in
Detroit. The Royal Oak Tribune was the
only paper in America that carried the
story about Rabbi Adler's death on the
day it occurred.
For financial reasons he entered the
field of public relations working for Ford
Motor Co. He has worked in many
different areas of public relations. He
just finished the publicity for Pavarotti
in Detroit. He has traveled all over the
world for Ford. "I've been to all the top
cities in the world — London, Paris,
Rome, Jerusalem and Charlevoix."
Carroll and his wife travel to
Charlevoix every summer with a group
of 12 couples. The group, called the
Friends of Charlevoix, has traveled
there for 10 consecutive years. They put
on skits and talent shows that Carroll
really enjoys.
His favorite hobby is comedy. While in
