New York (JTA) — Reform
Judaism's central body, the
Union of American Hebrew
Congregations board of
trustees, at their semi-annual
meeting, hailed the Mideast
peace initiative of Secretary
of State George Shultz, and
said Israel should announce
its willingness to withdraw
from some of the ad-
ministered territories as a
way "to stimulate the peace
process."
The group passed a resolu-
tion last Sunday commending
the 30 U.S. senators who en-
dorsed the peace initiative
and wrote Shultz to that ef-
fect in March.
Twelve other American
Jewish organizations also
made an announcement of
support of Shultz, in a
telegram sent to Israeli Prime
Minister Yitzhak Shamir
during his visit to the United
States.

Goodman, who is leaving the
National Conference on
Soviet Jewry after 16 years as
its executive director, was
praised by members of Con-
gress for having guided their
efforts in the struggle for
Soviet Jewry. At a reception
for Goodman, who was the
founding executive director of
the NCSJ, Sen. Paul Sar-
bannes (D-Md.) said, "There
are a lot of people living in
freedom today because of your
efforts!'
Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.),
chairman of the Commission
on Security and Cooperation
in Europe which monitors the
Helsinki Accords, said Good-
man's efforts have provided
hope for the hundreds of
thousands not yet allowed to
emigrate from the Soviet
Union.
