Well Help.
Will You?
NOW THERE'S A HEALTH PLAN
FOR YOUR HOME.
C oath Art Plotkin's
Oak Park tennis
team wraps up its
season this week after taking
second place in the Suburban
Athletic League's dual-meet
campaign. The Redskins, 7-5
overall, were 7-2 in league
play, dropping two matches to
first-place Dearborn Heights
Robichaud. The league meet
took place earlier this week.
Among Plotkin's netters are
Dan Kanat at No. 2 singles
and Ira Goldstein at No. 3.
Kanat entered the week 4-6
overall, 4-3 in league competi-
tion. Kanat, says Plotkin, has
a "big serve, strong strokes. A
big kid, very strong, hits a
hard ball!' Kanat scored a
first-round win in the May 20
state regional, winning the
final set 11-9. The long set
wore him out, however, which
hurt him in his second-round
match, which he lost. Golds-
tein did not play in the
regional because of a school
commitment.
Goldstein began the week
at 5-6 overall, 5-2 in league
competition. A left-hander,
Plotkin says he has "very nice
strokes. A nice net game, he
volleys well!'
The players, both seniors,
"have to work on keeping the
ball in play," adds Plotkin.
Plotkin is "satisfied" with
his team, which is strong in
relation to its competition.
The team's top three singles
players, including No. 1
Jaime Estupigan, are all
close in ability.
The Redskins do not com-
pare to area schools such as
Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook
or Detroit Country Day, says
Plotkin, "because a lot of
(Oak Park's) players never
played before high school!'
Plotkin, in his eighth year as
the Redskin's coach, believes
that none of this year's
players competed in tennis
before ninth grade. He tries to
get middle school kids in-
terested in the game, but it's
difficult because "tennis isn't
the most popular sport here
in Oak Park," which lacks a
racquet club. The city does
have ten public courts.
"There's a lot of room for
enrollment," Plotkin
concludes.
