Winners Picked

Two University of Michigan
students have been named for
scholarships for the
1988-1989 academic year.
Emily Burns will receive the
Harry and Sarah Laker Israel
Youth Scholarship while
Deborah Schlussel will
receive the Robert and Ger-
trude Berman Judaic Studies
Scholarship during services
at Cong. Beth Achim on Sun-
day. Both were selected for
their scholarship and par-
ticipation in communal
activities.
Emily, who has completed
her sophomore year at the
University of Michigan, will
spend her junior year at the
Hebrew University in
Jerusalem. She has been ac-
tive in the BBYO and USY
program and was elected to
the National Honor Society.
She is the daughter of Dr.
Elliot and Sharon Burns of
Armada, Mich.
Deorah, a delegate to the
1988 Republican National
Convention who is pursuing a
double major in Judaic
studies and poitical science at
the University of Michigan, is
the daughter of Dr. Herschel
and Toby Schlussel of
Southfield.
The awards, which are
granted by Beth Achim and
the scholarship sponsoring
families, will be presented to
the recipients by Dr. Gerald
Laker and Robert Berman.

held 8 p.m. May 27.
Sixty-three young men and
women, most of whom have
attended the Temple Israel
Religious School since
kindergarten, will participate
in worship.
