EN A FIRST PROPERTY COMMUNITY

Michael Fisher
Is Bar Mitzvah

Michael Fisher, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Philip Fisher, will
twin his bar mitzvah on
Saturday at Cong. Beth
Abraham Hillel Moses with
Alexander Varvak of Kiev,
Russia.
Alexander's parents, Nelly
and Mark Varvak, first ap-
plied for exit visas in 1979,
and were refused for
unknown reasons. For a while
they both continued their
jobs, but when their situation
as refuseniks deteriorated,
they divorced and Varvak
moved in with his mother. He
became involved with the
refusenik community in Kiev.
As time went on, the KGB
increased its interrogations of
Jews in Kiev, and many were
threatened, some arrested.
Varvak was forced to sign a
document promising not to
meet with foreigners. This
was part of the KGB attempt
to isolate the Jews in Kiev.
He was again refused per-
mission to leave in 1984, but
recently emigrated to
Brooklyn, N.Y. His former
wife, Nelly, is still a
refusenik, and is firm in her
desire to emigrate with her
son, Alexander.

Ex-Detroiter
Is Bar Mitzvah

Aron Joshua Silverton, son
of former Oak Parkers David
and Judi (Katz) Silverton,
celebrated his bar mitzvah
recently at Cong. B'nai
Shalom in Buffalo Grove, Ill.
Aron conducted services on
Friday evening and in addi-
tion to his Maftir, conducted
Musaf on Saturday morning.
In attendance were his
grandparents, Sam and
Louise Katz of Oak Park; his
godfather, Stewart Silverman
of Southfield; his aunt and
uncle, Beth and Paul Berghoff
of Fayetteville, N.C.; and
friends and relatives from
Michigan, Thxas, and Ibronto,
Ont.

Two To Twin
B'not Mitzvah

Dana Adler, daughter of
Renee and Robert Adler, and
Tamar Paull, daughter of
Lynda and Michael Paull,
will twin the observance of
their b'not mitzvah celebra-
tion at Adat Shalom Syna-
gogue on Saturday with Rena
Fulmakht, daughter of Maya
and Viktor Fulmakht of
Moscow, USSR.
Fulmakht is active in
Moscow's Hebrew teaching
