ed and what was retained.
The authors are requesting
that members of the com-
munity who have material
that might be germane to the
history send copies to Wayne
State University Press. This
might include photographs,
memoirs, documents, letters,
articles or other items of
historical interest.
Part of Bolkosky's and
Schwartz's task will be to of-
fer suggestions on how to
establish a central Jewish ar-
chives for Detroit. If anyone
would like to offer their
materials for inclusion in the
archives, they should also

Sen. Faxon Is Honoree
At Annual JNF Affair

Wayne State University
Press, with a subvention from
the Jewish Welfare Federatin,
plans to publish volume two
of "The History of the Jews of
Detroit." The authors are Dr.
Sidney Bolkosky of the
University of Michigan-
Dearborn and Dr. Matthew
Schwartz of Wayne State
University. They have been
working on the project for
more than a year, writing and
collecting materials.
Robert Rockaway's volume,
"The Jews of Detroit," covered
the historical period to 1914.
Volume two will continue
from 1914, end with 1967 and
include an epilogue which
will continue into the 1980s.
The history will include
religious congregations, the
secularists, landmanshaften,
business elements, Zionism,
Federation, Jewish Com-
munity Council and other

Faxon, who represents the
15th Senatorial District,
received B.S. and M.Ed.
degrees at Wayne State
University and a M.A. degree
in history at the University of
Michigan. He is an educator
and former teacher in the
Detroit Public Schools as well
as a commissioner of the
Education Commission of the
States. He is a member of the
Anti-Defamation League,
Founders Society, Friends of
Asian Art of the Detroit In-
stitute of Arts, State-Federal
Committee on Education-- of
the National Conference of
State Legislatures and the
Michigan State in 1970, 1974,
1978, 1982 and 1986.
Among his major legislative
accomplihments are the spon-
sorship of 'the legislation
establishing the Michigan
Council for the Arts and spon-
sorship of the bill which led to
the 1976 codification for the
Michigan School Code, the
first since 1933.
Faxon has served as president
pro tempore of the Senate,
chairman of the education
committee, chairman of the
K-12 sub-committee, a
member of the appropriations
committee, a member of corn-

merce and labor committees
and chairman of the joint
legislative committee on the
arts, a special committee for
the advancement of the
creative arts. As an educator,
he serves as president,
founder and headmaster of
the International School, a
private non-denominational,
non-profit, bilingual elemen-
tary day school.
As an artist and performer,
Sen. Faxon has exhibited his
personal paintings with the
Cranbrook Art Academy,
Wayne State University Arts
Gallery, the Univeisity of
Michigan and at the State
Capitol. As a performer, he
has appeared in productions
with the Detroit Symphony,
the International Symphony
