tension to be increased during
adolescence, with protests about
family rules, curfews, respon-

tension, marked by a total lack of
communication, continual de-

minimal levels of cooperation is
NOT typical and is reason to seek
outside assistance.

THE ADOLESCENT STRUGGLE
Being an adolescent isn't easy;
either is living with one. Our so-
ciety invented the term "Adoles-
cence" when it became clear that
teenagers were neither children
nor adults. The adolescent stage is
one where the youngster strives
for a new, more adult self concept,
increasing independence and new
types of relationships. At the same
time, physical, hormonal and
cognative changes are rampant.
The confusion of feelings, im-
pulses and both, wish for and fear,
about becoming an "adult" lead to
inconsistent behavior, mood
swings and needs for rebellion.
Parents need to be supportive and
understanding, while setting clear
and reasonable limits.
It is not uncommon for family

A new pilot program offered
by invitation only to qualified
11th and 12th grade campers
will travel the Missinabi
River in canoes ending in
James Bay, the southern most

The campers consist of most-
ly veterans of the Fresh Air

tion. These sessions will be
devoted to trip planning,
wilderness skills, map and
compass, paddle making and
leadership training.
The trip includes visits to
Indian reservations, trapper's
lodgings, logging camps, sites
of ancient Indian pictographs,
and the Hudson Bay Outpost
— the oldest trading post in
North America. The group
will also paddle voyager
canoes for an outing into the
Arctic Ocean.
The trip is directed by Craig
Pollack, with Robin Loznak
