like saying if you're a jazz
musician you're black, even if
you're white. And so if you're
a comedian you're Jewish,
even if you're Italian.
"Jewish humor permeates
everything. And it all comes
out of pain, I think, because
comedy is the greatest release
in life. So Jews have tradi-
tionally made jokes to achieve
that greatest moment of
release."
Seinfeld admits that if he
weren't doing comedy, he'd
probably be a serious person.
"I would try and perform
serious stand-up, although I
don't think there's much
money in that, just standing
around and looking serious."
But there's definitely
money in being funny. "My
parents thought once I tried
stand-up comedy, failed and
eventually got it out of my
system, I'd finally be normal
and get a job. Well, I recently
bought my mother a Mer-
cedes, so I don't think she's ex-
pecting me to get another job
anymore!" ❑
