Teen Twins
Bat Mitzvah
Jennifer Bleyer, daughter of
Alan and Eileen Bleyer of
Bloomfield Township, will
symbolically twin her bat
mitzvah with Irina Knokh,
daughter of Vladmir and
Asya Knokh of Leningrad, on
Saturday at Cong. Beth
Abraham Hillel Moses.
Knokh applied for exit visas
in 1974. He soon lost his job
when it was discovered he
wanted to emigrate. He was
denied the visas on the basis
of being a security risk
because he was employed at a
special bureau in 1969. The
family's apartment has been
searched several times by
KGB agents. Knokh is one of
the main Hebrew teachers in
Leningrad. Asya is a music
teacher who tutors her
daughter. Irina has won many
prizes for her musical
compositions.
Jennifer, a student at Hillel
Day School, has written to
Irina continuously. She has
not received any response to
date.
Mom To 1Vvin
With Soviet Teen
Wendy Betel, daughter of
Ellen and Edward Betel and
Lindsey Liss, daughter of
Beverly and Arthur Liss, will
twin the observance of their
b'not mitzvah celebration at
Adat Shalom Synagogue at 9
a.m. Saturday with Inna
Lazutin, daughter of Tatyana
and Vladimir Lazutin of
Moscow, USSR.
The Lazutins were refused
exit visas since 1980 without
any reason given. In 1984,
both Lazutins signed the
Declaration to the Presidium
of the Supreme Soviet deman-
ding free repatriation of Jews
to Israel. They also signed a
petition on behalf of Prisoners
of Zion.
In 1985, the authorities
asked the Lazutins to bring in
their papers but nothing hap-
pened. They have been
granted Israeli citizenship ac-
cording to their request.
Wendy and Lindsey have
written to Inna and will at-
tempt to reach the Lazutins
by phone.
