Sarah Hazan
Is Bat Mitzvah

Sarah Hazan, daughter of
Dr. Toby and Charlene
Hazan, will celebrate her bat
mitzvah Saturday at 9 a.m. at
Cong. Shaarey Zedek.
Sarah is twinning her bat
mitzvah with Evgenia
Galperina of the Soviet
Union. Evgenia is the
daughter of Sonia and Lev
Galperin of Moscow.
An engineer, Galperin and
his family applied for emigra-
tion in 1980. The Galperins
were refused repeatedly every
six months with the only ex-
planation being that there is
"no reason for them to leave
the USSR." Fired from his job,
he is now working at odd
manual jobs on construction
sites.
Evgenia was not able to
celebrate her bat mitzvah so
Sarah will read from the
Torah for both of them.
Sarah is the granddaughter
of Rachel and David Hazan of
Oak Park and Julia Corey of
Grand Rapids and the late
Charles Corey.

Aaron Charfoos
Twins Ceremony

Aaron Charfoos, son of
Lynda and Ronald Charfoos,
will twin the observance of
his bar mitzvah celebration 9
a.m. Saturday at Adat
Shalom Synagogue with Yuli
Gornshtein, son of Alisa and
Boris Gornshtein of Len-
ingrad, USSR.
The Gornshteins were
refused exit visas because
Soviet authorities claimed
that Alisa's previous work as
an electronics engineer had
exposed her to "secrets."
Gornshtein is an engineer
with a Ph.D. degree in elec-
tronics. His specialty is gas
analysis. Before applying, he
worked in the Leningrad
Building Department on elec-
trical vacuum instruments.
Both Gornshteins speak
English and Hebrew.
The Gornshteins long to
reunite with his mother and
brother in Israel.
Aaron has written to Yuli
and will attempt to reach the
Gornshteins by phone.
