FRIDAY, MARCH 18, 1988
Congregation Shaarey
Zedek is hosting its Seventh
Annual Film Festival.
Phyllis Zieve Friedman,
chairwoman for the syna-
gogue's Cultural Commis-
sion, said the series will open
8 p.m. March 29 with The
Boat is Full, a suspenseful
story of refugees who fled
Germany at the onset of
World War II for the suppos-
ed neutrality of Switzerland.
This motion picture was
nominated for an Academy
Award, for Best Foreign Film
in 1982 and won the B.W.
Griffith Award for Best
Foreign Film and the
Christopher Award. It also
took prizes at the Berlin and
Strassbourg Film Festivals.
The movie is in German and
French with English
subtitles.
The second movie night, 8
p.m. April 10, will be a salute
to Israel on her 40th anniver-
sary. Three films of Israel will
be shown.
Jerusalem is a documen-
tary narrated by Eli Wiesel.
He provides the background
of the City of Peace, 17 times
destroyed and 17 times
rebuilt. Wiesel presents the
history, legends and myths of
Jerusalem, with an artistic
view of the new city.
The second picture on April
10 is Shalom of Safed.
Shalom, a Hasidic Jew born
in Safed, Israel, began pain-
ting at the age of 60. His
works stand alongside the
greatest folk artists of the
20th Century. Footage cap-
tures the special quality of
Shalom's art and the at-
mosphere of the Galilean
town of Safed, which was the
center of 16th Century
Jewish mysticism.
The final film, Nine Narrow
Miles, is a presentation of how
vital the West Bank is to
Israel's security.
Sponsors for the film
festival are Sharon and Dr.
Richard Brown. There is no
charge for admission and
both evenings will be held in
Shaarey Zedek's Morris Adler
Hall under the auspices of the
Cultural Commission.
