Women Stage
Hunger Strike

New York (JTA) — Ameri-
can and Israeli women, mem-
bers of Naamat USA and
Naamat Israel, are joining
Jewish women refuseniks in
a hunger strike to mark the
annual celebration of Inter-
national Women's Day. The
gesture of solidarity occurs
during the second annual
fast organized by Jewish
Woman Against Refusal,
which is taking place in
Moscow, Leningrad, Cher-
novtsy (Chernovitz), Kharkov,
Vilnius (Vilna) and Tallinn.
The aim of the hunger
strike is to remind the inter-
national community that
refuseniks are being denied
the right to emigrate as
stipulated by the 1975 Hel-
sinki human rights accords,
Action for Soviet Jewry in
Waltham, Mass., the Nation-
al Conference on Soviet Jew-
ry and Naamat said last
week.
Soviet women have asked
their American counterparts
to contact American and
Soviet officials on their
plight. The Moscow vigil was
to include 150 women as-
sembled in seven locations. In
Leningrad, more than 50
women were to gather in
three locations.

Few Applicants
Ever Convert

Amsterdam (JTA) — Very
few of the applicants for for-
mal conversion to Judaism in
the Netherlands ever com-
plete the process, according to
rabbis interviewed on Dutch
television recently.
One of every 80 or 90 of his
applicants become Jews and
only after years of study, said
Rabbi Isaac Jacobs of the
Chief Rabbinate for the
Dutch Provinces. The low
completion figure was at-
tributed also to rabbinic
discouragement.
Applicants explain they
aspire to Judaism after not
finding salvation in other
beliefs,
