Last East European Jews
Focus Of FAS, Midrasha
The Midrasha-College of
Jewish Studies, a division of
United Hebrew Schools, and
the Fresh Air Society will co-
sponsor a program on March
20, entitled, The Last Jews of
Eastern Europe. The program
will take place at 2 p.m. in the
LaMed Auditorium of the
United Hebrew Schools. In
addition to the lecture slide
presentation and klezmer
musical concert, a sneak
preview of "University in the
Woods" will be presented.
Yale Strom, author of The
Last Jews of Eastern Europe,
a photodocumentary which
shows the everyday lives of
Jews in 28 communities in
Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia,
Hungary, Poland, Romania,
USSR and Yugoslavia is the
featured presenter. During
the winter of 1984-1985, he
went behind the Iron Curtain
to record the stories of those
Jews who remain.
Strom is a graduate of San
Diego State University and
New York University with a
Master's degree in Yiddish
studies. He is a fellow of the
YIVO Institute in New York.
He has been involved with
klezmer music since 1981
when he did field recordings
in Eastern Europe and used
this material for his klezmer

The program is open to the
public at no charge. The au-
dience will be introduced to
the new program "University
in the Woods" co-sponsored by
the Midrasha and Fresh Air
Society.
University in the Woods is
created for adults age 55 and
older with an emphasis on in-
tellectual stimulation.

Dr. Raymond Franklin
The Detroit chapter of the
American Jewish Committee
will present the third in a
series of four programs on the
theme, "Issues: Election '88"
at 8 p.m. March 23 in the
Alpert Room at Temple Beth
El.
Dr. Raymond S. Franklin,
senior professor of economics
at Queens College, City
University of New York, will
be the featured speaker. Dr.
Harry Gold of Oakland
University will chair the
meeting.
A native Detroiter, Dr.
Franklin received his Ph.D.
degree from the University of -
California, Berkeley and has
taught at Vassar College and
City College of New York. He
is director of labor studies and
the Center for Labor and
Society at Queens College
where he has taught for the
last two decades. Dr. Franklin
has published extensively, in-
cluding the The Political
Economy of Racism,
American Capitalism: Two
Visions and Shadows of Race
and Class.
The series is co-sponsored
by Temple Beth El. The
welcome will be given by its
president, Jerome Ash.
Informal discussion with
refreshments will follow the
program. The public is in-
vited, and there is no charge.
