Hampton's

Continued from preceding page
endeavor a successful one.
Hampton's is ideally located
in a free-standing building
with plenty of parking . . .
and that big factor in their
favor . . . home-cooking.
IT WAS IN 1962 when the
late Nicholas George opened
the Mai Kai Theater on
Plymouth Rd. and Farm-
ington Rd. . . . Mai Kai
Theater showed its final
movie in January . . . and to-
day is the beautiful Omni
Star Performing Arts
Theatre.
Must have been extrasen-
sory perception by George
because of his foresight in
planning what would even-
tually have live stage shows
. . . An orchestra pit is 65-feet
wide and the stage is 40-feet
deep.
No more glass inner lobby
with curtains . . . A solid wall
and double doors provide
quiet . . . The remodeling of
about half-million dollars in-
cludes new curtain, four new
dressing rooms, structural
changes in the inner and
outer lobby areas, isolation of
the theater area from the con-
cession region, etc.
We went to the opening of
Wayne Newton Show . . . Cars
were lined up already at 7:30
p.m. from both east and west
on Plymouth . . . good thing
people went early . . . Four
searchlights in the sky .. .
and the imposing Omni Star
Theatre sign loomed in front
. . . as white stretch limos
were everywhere among the
autos.
Patti Page and Jerry Vale
played five performances
through March 6 . . . backed
by the very fine 21-piece
Johnny Trudell orchestra.
Now appearing through
this Sunday are the McQuire
Sisters and Jack Jones .. .
Debbie Reynolds and Donald
O'Conner come in March
17-20, followed by Bobby Vin-
ton, March 24-27.
The mood changes to the
beat of Detroit's own Tempta-
tions, April 21-24 . . . rIbm
Jones will bring his exciting
popular musical offerings
April 28 through May 1.
THE FORMER Hello Deli
had a cute name but never
did make the winner'ss circle
. . . Kabob Grill at the same
locale in Southfield Plaza,
Southfield Rd. and 12 1/2 Mile,
is making a big run with its
Mideastern food.
JUST A THOUGHT Dept.
. . . If they want to be suc-
cessful, new owners of that
Sunrise Cafe on len Mile and
Greenfield should give
thoughts on having waitress
Shelly Rogow run the place
. . . She's not only an excellent
waitress, but knows how to
train others, has a very loyal

following and is conscien-
tiously personable with
everyone . . . For sure the
place needs someone . . . and
Shelly could be the right
ticket.
NEW RESTAURANT on
Grand River in Farmington is
called "Hot Dawg!. . .& More"
. . . featuring what orchestra
leader-restaurant owner
Larry Freedman calls "the
real Chicago dog, a pure beef
delicacy created totally free of
fillers and additives, served
on a steamed poppyseed bun."
. . . When fully dressed, his
Chicago hot dog is topped
with mustard, relish, onion,
tomato slices, hot sport pep-
pers, dill pickle spear and
sprinkled with celery salt.
Setting of "Hot Dawg!. . .&
More" is an original
1,750-feet design by
Gluckman Designs who pro-
duced uncopied artwork and
stained mosaics called
assemblages, to coordinate
with the pink, peach, aqua
and lavender color scheme .. .
plus jazz and classical music
played throughout the day.

ALMOST 30 years the all-
night voice of radio station
WJR, Jay "Night Flight"
Roberts will be master of
ceremonies for the opening of
"Musical Monday Nights at
the Kingsley."
The awaited series begins
March 21 . . . with Jay in-
troducing the very popular
Johnny Trudell Big Band and
featured guest star vocalist
Ortheia Barnes.
Second Monday night of the
series, March 28, will
headline the Marcus
Belgrave Sextet, with Gene
Elzy, music director of WJR,
as master of ceremonies.
Doors of "Musical Nights at
the Kingsley" will open at 7
p.m., with music 7:30 to 11
p.m. . . . Admission is $7 per
person and cash bar available.
Jay Roberts was emcee for
the highly-successful Woody
Herman benefit dance/con-
cert at Kingsley Inn last fall.

FOOD BOOTHS will be
indoors and outdoors at the
Jewish Festival '88", May 1,
8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Jewish Corn-
munity Center, Maple and
Drake . . . sponsored by
American Jewish Comittee,
Detroit Chapter.
The booths will include a
variety of Jewish ethnic
kosher foods from the world
over by many organizations.
For more information about
the food booths, call Arnold
Michlin at 626-1570 . . . He's
co-chairperson of the food
booths with Shirley Behar.

CONGRATS. . . . to Lillian
Weinger . on her 80th
birthday.
