Parade, Spoofs
Mark Purim

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Much of
Tel Aviv was closed to traffic
March 3 for the annual
Adloyada, the Purim parade.
Thousands of marchers,
scores of floats and giant
helium-filled balloons im-
ported from the Far East
wound along Ben Yehudah
Street and Allenby Road. A
day-long drizzle that made
the pavements slick did not
dampen the carnival
atmosphere.
The news media introduced
an April Fools' Day note.
Israel Radio broadcast, with
no hint of levity, a report that
the Tel Aviv Maccabi basket-
ball team had been sold to a
Canadian millionaire and
would be transferred to the
United States, to play in Na-
tional Basketball Association
tournaments as the "Bronx
Sabras."
Later, the army radio
reported that the Transport
Ministry decided to replace
all male taxi drivers with
women, because male drivers
were too aggressive toward
tourists.

1DF Thwarts
Infiltrators

Tel Aviv (JTA) — An Israel
Defense Force patrol inter-
cepted and killed three ter-
rorists attempting to in-
filtrate Israel through the
southern Lebanon security
zone last weekend.
The would-be infiltrators
were carrying Kalachnikov
assault rifles, wire cutters, ex-
plosives, grenades and maps
of Israel and Jerusalem.
In an unrelated incident,
troops of the Israeli-backed
South Lebanon Army killed
three guerrillas of the Shiite
fundamentalist Hezbollah
militia who attempted to
storm their position near Bint
Jbail village.

Swastikas For
Desegrationist

New York (JTA) — Laurie
Recht, a Jewish woman who
was the only Yonkers, N.Y.,
resident to speak in support
of federal court-ordered hous-
ing desegregation, found a
swastika spray-painted on the
hallway wall outside of her
apartment Feb. 25.
The vandalism followed
what she said were "death
threats by mail and phone"
since speaking out in
January in support of low-
income housing in the
predominantly white
neighborhoods of east
Yonkers.
