are strongly rebutted.
The Sandinistas insist they
do not have any official anti-
Semitic policy, but they also
do not have any official rela-
tions with Israel, whom they
have not forgiven for supply-
ing Gen. Somoza with arms.
Thus the Sandinistas main-
tained minimal relations
with Israel, never permitting
the Israeli ambassador to pre-
sent his credentials. Even-

guans broke relations with
Israel completely.
While there is no Israeli
embassy in Managua, there
is an embassy for the Pales-

privileges. For nearly two
decades, the Sandinistas have
had close ties with the Pal-
estinians, who allegedly as-
sisted in training the San-
dinistas in guerilla warfare
prior to the revolution.
Recent allegations of Is-
rael's involvment in the Iran-
Contra affair have done little
to improve relations between
the two governments.
Whether or not the Nicara-

Managua depends much on
the success of the Arias peace
plan. At present, there are no
signs to indicate the situation
in Nicaragua will change.
And, after a decade away
from their homes in Nica-
ragua, the question remains
whether the Jews of Con-
gregacion Israelita will ever
again be able to call Nica-
ragua home. El
