The autumn, which began
with shimmers of hope over
the signing of a Central
American peace plan, ended
with shadows of skepticism.
The colors of the Christmas
season were stained with the
bloodshed of one attack after
another. For the Huembes
family, concerns about
politics or peace play second
to concerns of food and
shelter, both of which they are
struggling to hold on to.
For the last two years, the
Sandinistas have made
several official offers to return
the synagogue to the Jewish
community, which is now too
small to maintain the
building. In the past, the ex-
iled Jews did not accept such
offers due to the "prevailing
political climate." But last
fall, the community in exile,
sparked by the optimistic
spirit of the peace plan, decid-
ed to accept the offer.
"We now forsee the possibli-
ty of the resumption of Jewish
communal life in Nicaragua,"
said congregation secretary
Luft, who has requested the
government restore the syn-
agogue to its original con-
dition.
But so far, the exile com-
munity has not received a
reply to its letter of accep-
tance.
"We're in limbo," said Luft,
who is now working as a
manager in an export com-
pany in Miami. "If they don't
really want to give us the
synagogue, let them have it.
There's not going to be any
real Jewish life again in

Freelance writer Lila Orbach
spent two weeks in Nicaragua in
December, working on a
television documentary and
this exclusive article for
The Jewish News.

Nicaragua; not if the PLO
and the Libyans are there. If
more Jews come now, they'll
probaby have problems. But if
they do give it back to us,
we'll send someone there who
has an American passport.
But first, they should give the
synagogue back."
The government has said
the building will be exempt
from taxation and from con-
fiscation in the future as pro-
vided by the "law of associa-
tions."
The actual persecution of
Jews in Nicaragua is still
to be questioned, as many
gross exaggerations have sur-
rounded this situation. Nica-
raguan Jews in Miami, like
Luft, claim they fled Nica-
ragua to avoid further har-
rassment and confiscation of
property by the Sandinistas.
In his 1986 nationally tel-
evised plea for Contra aid,
President Reagan supported
such claims, stating that
the Nicaraguan synagogue
had been "desecrated and
fire bombed and the entire
Jewish community" had been
"forced to leave Nicaragua."
But delegations of American
Jewish leaders, including
Rabbi Balfour Brickner, a
longtime leader of the Union
of American Hebrew Congre-
gations, have concluded such
charges of anti-Semitism are
unsubstantiated. They say it
was the ravages of revolution
and not the threat of anti-
Semitism that chased the
Jews away. They've urged the
Reagan Administration not to
use such claims for political
purposes, such as raising
money for the Contras.
In general, most will agree
that persecution of Jews in
Nicaragua was based on their
social and economic status
and not their religion. Ac-
cusations of anti-Semitism
