Tikkun Magazine Takes
`Startling' Position
GARY ROSENBLATT
Editor
M
ore than a few
Jewish publications
have criticized
Israel's policy of beatings dur-
ing the current Palestinian
uprisings, but perhaps none
have made their case with
such enthusiasm as Tikkun,
the bimonthly magazine
which was founded two years
ago as a left-wing response to
Commentary.
The publisher, Nan Fink,
has sent out an advanced copy
of the March editorial, which
she calls "the clearest and
strongest statement to
emerge from the Jewish
world on the present crisis!'
Indeed, the cover letter is as
provocative as the editorial
itself, which was written by
editor Michael Lerner. Fink
states that Tikkun "is taking
a rather startling and outra-
geous position" in calling for
a demilitarized Palestinian
state and a plebiscite.
The six-page editorial, en-
titled "The Occupation: Im-
moral And Stupid," argues
that Israel's harsh treatment
of the Palestinians is not on-
ly immoral but politically
harmful to Israel. Lerner
calls for establishing a
demilitarized and politically
neutral Palestinian state on
the West Bank and Gaza.
Who would negotiate for the
Palestinians? Any group will-
ing to recognize Israel's right
to exist, with Israel holding a
plebiscite immediately "to
determine whom West Bank
Palestinians want to
negotiate for them."
Lerner contends that
American Jews "have an ex-
traordinary historical respon-
sibility at this moment" and
that to criticize Israel private-
ly but remain silent publicly
"is actually a dramatic
betrayal of the interests of our
people!" He calls on readers to
circulate the editorial
anywhere and everywhere in
the community, to urge
organizations to distribute
and discuss it, and to send
petitions to Tikkun which
will in turn forward them to
the Government of Israel.
Addiction Among
Jews Is Growing

The myth that Jews are
not alcoholics has been laid to
rest in recent years. Now
studies show that not only is
alcoholism among Jews far
from rare but that the in-
cidence of cross-addiction —
to both alcohol and another
substance —may be far
higher among Jews than
non-Jews.
An item in the February
issue of Psychology Today
refers to studies done by
psychologist Benzion Twerski
that found that while 20 per-
cent of men and 34 percent of
women surveyed by Alcohol-
ics Anonymous had more
than one addiction, among
Jewish alcoholics 61 percent
of the men and 78 percent of
the women were cross-
addicted.
The latter survey was done
by a network of support
groups known as Jewish
Alcoholics and Chemically
Dependent and Significant
Others. Twerski said that
"American Jews
have an
extraordinary
historical
responsibility."
denial, isolation, ignorance of
the disease, and guilt — all
factors in alcoholism in
general — were "greatly in-
tensified by the myth of
Jewish sobriety." He added
that Orthodox Jews seem to
suffer the most from these
symptoms.
Based on the excerpt in the
February issue of Manhattan,
Inc., Clay Felker's business
magazine, Katz's novel ap-
pears to be a thinly disguised
description of his days at CBS.
The excerpt, "Good Night
And Good Luck," deals with
having to fire staff en masse
when new management takes
over, offering a chilling ac-
count of a meeting in which
the chairman of the board
and the vice president for
finance instruct key ex-
ecutives precisely how to go
about dismissing 475 people
that day. It has the disturbing
ring of truth to it, and the pro-
tagonist, after doing his share
of the dirty work (22 people),
worries about the price he
must pay to keep his own job.
Carter Calls For
Firm U.S. Action
President Jimmy Carter
believes the Reagan Ad-
ministration has not been
forceful enough in its Mideast
peace efforts, and calls for an
international conference to be
convened by the five perma-
nent members of the United
Nations Security Council.
