Israel May
Seek Extradition

Montreal (JTA) — Israel
may seek the extradition of
convicted Palestinian ter-
rorist Mohammad Mahmud
Issa, who entered Canada a
year ago on an immigration
visa he allegedly obtained
under false pretenses'.
Reginald Smith, president
of the International Associa-
tion of Airline Pilots, told
reporters here that he was in-
formed by the Israel consul
general in Montreal, Shalom
Schirman, that "The Israel
government has started
juridicial negotiations with
the government of Canada"
for Issa's extradition.

JCCouncil Plans
To Leaflet Event

The Jewish Community
Council's SoViet Jewry com-
mittee will distribute leaflets
beginning at 1:15 p.m. Feb. 28
when the Ukrainian State
Dance Company appears at
Masonic Temple.
According to Committee
Chairman Jeannie Weiner,
the event will be used as an
opportunity to inform
theatergoers that, despite
glasnost, Soviet Jewry is be-

Nevertheless, failure to
come to terms with political
realities and strike the best
deal they can with Israel may
cost them whatever fruits of
victory they have achieved
and more.
The mood in Israel is acute-
ly tuned to the unrest in the
territories and at present,
there is a certain willingess to
cut a deal with the Palestin-
ians. That mood, however,
could undergo a sudden, radi-
cal transformation if hostil-
ities were simply to continue
indefinitely, if Jewish urban
areas were to be seriously
threatened or if Jewish lives
were to be lost.
Elections in Israel — per-
haps the most critical in the
nation's history — are just
nine months away, and there
is substantial scope for an ex-
plosion of frustration among
Israelis before then.
Such a development could
open the door to strongman
Ariel Sharon, who has al-
ready demonstrated his im-
patience with the painstak-
ing diplomatic process and
who boasts that he "knows
how to handle the Arabs:'
