great danger from their own

Nevertheless, failure to
come to terms with political
realities and strike the best
deal they can with Israel may
cost them whatever fruits of
victory they have achieved
and more.
The mood in Israel is acute-
ly tuned to the unrest in the
territories and at present,
there is a certain willingess to
cut a deal with the Palestin-
ians. That mood, however,
could undergo a sudden, radi-
cal transformation if hostil-
ities were simply to continue
indefinitely, if Jewish urban
areas were to be seriously
threatened or if Jewish lives
were to be lost.
Elections in Israel — per-
haps the most critical in the
nation's history — are just
nine months away, and there
is substantial scope for an ex-
plosion of frustration among
Israelis before then.
Such a development could
open the door to strongman
Ariel Sharon, who has al-
ready demonstrated his im-
patience with the painstak-
ing diplomatic process and
who boasts that he "knows
how to handle the Arabs:'
