American Jewish criticism
has prospered just as
Americans in general have
grown more appreciative of
Israel's accomplishments and
of its strategic value to the
United States. Ironic, but not
yet tragic."
Novelist Mark Helprin ad-
vocates putting one's house in
order while at the same time
bracing it to stand against its
enemies. In other words,
strengthening morally from
within also strengthens one's
defenses. Or, as he puts it,
"for every new tank brigade,
an Agranat Commission; for
every Agranat Commission, a
new tank brigade."

A bleak analysis of the
Arab-Israel situation in Sun-
day's New York Times by
widely honored and respected
Jerusalem bureau chief
Thomas Friedman suggests
that there may be no end to
the current crisis. "Maybe
this is not just the present,
but the past and the future,"
he writes. "Maybe after all
that has happened, Pales-
tinians and Israelis still have
not come to terms with each
others' legitimate national
claims, and never will."
He says that the war is
returning to its roots, from a
conflict between Arab states
and Israel, and between ar-
mies, to a struggle between
individual Jews and Pales-
tinians inside the same
borders. The level of rage and
hatred on both sides has come
to the surface, with the anger
of Arab youths met by the
anger of 18-year-old Israeli
soldiers.
West Bank expert Meron
Benivisti calls it "a shep-
herds' war" between Abra-
ham and Ishmael that has
returned to its ancient origins
— a battle with clubs and
stones.
Friedman notes that the
Palestinians have failed to ex-
plain exactly what their
demands are and what they
are willing to give in on, that
youths are demonstrating
and shopkeepers are on strike
for reasons no one seems able
to articluate, "making their
strike, like much of their
history, totally self-defeating."

TV Coverage
Is Incomplete

.

For all of the media bashing
Israel has received of late, it
is significant to note that the
February 1 issue of U.S. News
& World Report features a
two-page editorial by Morti-
mer B. Zuckerman, chairman
and editor-in-chief, entitled

"TV's Incomplete Picture:"
which defends Israel and
criticizes American television
coverage of the violence.
"Television has polluted the
public debate because it is in-
herently difficult for pictures
to give context, history and
meaning to events;' writes
Zuckerman, who charges that
the television reporting of the
West Bank and Gaza upris-
ings have been "inadequate"
and at times "inflammatory."
He singles out ABC-TV for
comparing the riots in Israel
to those in South Africa,
asserting that it is the job of
journalists to take superficial
comparisons "as a starting
point, not a conclusion."
Zuckerman calls ABC's com-
parison "not only unfair" but
one that "ignores history and
reality," and he goes on to
point out numerous major dif-
ferences, including the fact
that "unlike the South
African blacks, the Arabs of
Gaza and the West Bank have
an alternative. They suffer —
and no one denies that they
suffer — because they and
their leaders have made a
choice."
That choice, he continues, is
not to live in peace with
Israel, not to negotiate with
Israel, and to seek the
dissolution of the Jewish
state.
Zuckerman asserts that it
would be suicidal for Israel to
relinquish control of the West
Bank and Gaza because "even
if the West Bank were demil-
itarized like the Sinai, an
Arab army could cross the
river in the afternoon and
control the ridges overlooking
Tel Aviv by the same evening.
"The reality is that Israel
will stay on the West Bank for
a long time even though its
presence there will continue
to be challenged," predicts
Zuckerman. "Whatever the
problems and tensions, they
can be endured because the
real alternatives are worse."
