byword" when it comes to
public demonstrations,
though, the article states.
"First, as a matter of course,
we hesitate to participate in
demonstrations if Torah
authorities are not fully in
control of the substance —
and the tone of expression —
of the gathering. We cannot
waive our distinct identity as
the Am HaTorah, the people
of the Torah, and submit carte
blanches to others to speak on
our behalf."
Another reason cited was
the uncertainty of gauging
the effect of such demonstra-
tions on the Kremlin and the
Jews of the USSR.
The article called for
mutual respect from those
who participated in the rally
for those who, out of
did not — and vice ver-
sa. It also noted that Torah
sages have consistently
counseled that at least one
element of the Jewish com-
munity should always abstain
from publicly criticizing
Moscow and be able to deal
with Soviet authorities, as
the need arises. "The Ibrah
community" considers itself
part of this segment, the ar-
ticle stated, and continues to
express "its concern in
positive, admirable activities
that some day will be re-
vealed for their singular con-
tribution to the well-being of
Soviet Jews."

Symposium
On U.S. Jews
And Israel

A symposium on American
Jewish intellectuals' at-
titudes towards Israel takes
up most of the February issue
of Commentary, with an em-
phasis on whether criticism of
the Jewish state is healthy or
dangerous. The 49 respon-
dents were also asked if they
believe Israel has fulfilled or
disappointed the hopes vested
in it. While the responses
were gathered prior to the
outbreak of violence among
the Palestinians of Gaza and
the West Bank, they are no
doubt applicable today.
The responses are brief (by
the magazine's standards)
and make for thoughtful
reading. Leonard Fein, the
writer and teacher, says that
until now "we have been able
to defend the mythic Israel;
our new challenge is to learn
how to defend, with equal
skill and energy, the flawed
Israel."
Steven Spiegel, a professor
of political science at UCLA,
says "it is ironic that
