Israeli Town
Signs Pact

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Soviet
Republic of Georgia has
agreed to help Jews of
Georgian origin in Israel
preserve their 2,500-year-old
cultural heritage, Deputy
Mayor Ephraim Gur of Ash-
dod announced last week.
Gur, who just returned from
Georgia, his birthplace, said
he signed a cultural exchange
agreement with the minister
of culture, Valery Assatyani,
and the minister of education,
Natella Vasadze.
It was not an official trip.
Gur said the Georgian corn-
munity in Israel would get
official Soviet Georgian sup-
port and help in collecting
documents, pictures, letters
and sacred objects. The inten-
tion is to establish a museum
of Georgian Jewish history
and a library in Israel.

Students Back
Ethiopian Jews

Jerusalem (JTA) — The In-
ternational Jewish Students
Conference on Ethiopian
Jewry closed with an urgent
appeal to Jewish organiza-
tions all over the world to
mount an intensive campaign
for the right of Jews to leave
Ethiopia.
The appeal was contained
in "The Ashkelon Platform
on Ethiopian Jewry," which
the participants signed after
hearing some of the most
scathing criticism ever voiced
publicly of the Israeli govern-
ment and the Jewish Agency
for their handling of the twin
problems of Jewish emigra-
tion from Ethiopia and the
absorption of the immigrants
after they arrive in Israel.
