Israeli Medics
Treat Iranians
Jerusalem — Prominent
including
Iranians —
members of the Ayatollah
Khomeini's family — have
travelled secretly to Israel for
medical care, doctors at the
Hadassah-Hebrew University
Medical Center here have
disclosed.
Treatment of the Iranians
came to light as Dr. Shaul
Feldman, head of the medical
center's neurology depart-
ment, denied reports in the
Kuwaiti newspaper Eldai El-
Am that a team of five Israeli
doctors had saved the life of
Iran's militant spiritual
leader, the Ayatollah
Ruhollah Khomeini.
Dr. Feldman said "tens" of
Iranians had been treated at
the medical center and other
Israel hospitals since the
Ayatollah and his Islamic
fundamentalist followers seiz-
ed power in 1979 from Shah
Mohammed Reza Pahlevi.
According to Dr. David Ben
Ezra, an eye specialist at the
center, many of the Iranians
treated at the medical center
at Ein Karem cross the border
in Afghanistan secretly and
make their way through
Turkey to Israel. Others fly to
Europe and then on to Israel,
changing airlines and
destinations frequently to
hide their final destination.
Media Charge
Interference
Tel Aviv (JTA) — American
and other journalists criticiz-
ed Israeli authorities for their
heavy handed interference in
the media coverage of the
West Bank and Gaza distur-
bances. The Foreign Press
Association (FPA) lodged a
complaint of a "veritable
campaign of vilification"
against its 200 members.
And Haaretz reported last
week that Israel TV refused
to screen an IDF-prepared
report on the deportation of
four Palestinians. The
newspaper said an IDF
spokesman has mobilized TV
reporter Beni Liss and a
cameraman for reserve duty
in order to prepare the report.
But TV news editor Yaakov
Ahimeir refused to broadcast
it without prior screening.
The FPA complained was
read by its current board
chairman, Robert Slater of
Time magazine, at a FPA-
arranged news conference
with President Chaim Her-
zog. The foreign reporters ob-
jected to government-imposed
restrictions against entering
areas of Gaza, calling for ex-
panded access instead.
