Israel Ripped
In Spain Press

Madrid (JTA) — Israel's im-
age has been severly battered
by the Spanish news media's
coverage of disturbances in
the West Bank and Gaza
Strip.
Supporters of Israel fear
that whatever they achieved
in generating friendship and
sympathy for Israel during
the year since Spain
established diplomatic rela-
tions with the Jewish state
may have been nullified in re-
cent weeks.
The Israeli ambassador,
Shlomo Ben Ami, was inter-
viewed by three major
newspapers last week and
was on radio. He also ap-
peared on an afternoon tele-
vision program.
But pro-Israel circles here
said this could hardly
counteract the near total
domination of the press, radio
and prime-time television by
Israel's foes.

Labor Party
Boss Resigns

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Labor
Party was thrown into con-
sternation by the recent sur-
prise resignation of its
secretary general, Uzi
Baram, at the start of an elec-
tion year.
Baram, a member of the
Knesset, said he was leaving
his party post for "personal
reasons" without first con-
sulting Labor Party chairman
Shimon Peres, the foreign
minister. Baram explained
that he did not want "to pro-
voke pressures on me to
relent."
According to Labor sources,
Peres is already trying to per-
suade Baram to change his
mind, and some believe he
may succeed. Baram, an
outspoken dove, is known to
be at odds with Defense
Minister Yitzhak Rabin over
policy matters. He insisted
that was not what prompted
him to quit.
