FRIDAY, JANUARY 22, 1988

paign Sabbath tonight and

synagogues and temples.
That is why pledges are
needed now, said Federation
President Dr. Conrad Giles,
who explained that the com-
munity can budget for its
1988 needs only if it knows
how much money will be com-
ing in through the Campaign.
That point was emphasized
by Campaign Chairmen
David B. Hermelin and Jane
Sherman, who noted that the
strength of the community
depends upon everyone of its
members "standing up now to
make a pledge. If we don't
have most of our pledges by
the time the Campaign closes
on April 11," said Sherman,
"we may have some tough
budgeting decisions to make."
Hermelin added, "This
year's Campaign theme is
`You can make a difference.'
That means every member of
our community is important,
whether they've givn before
or are new to Campaign. If I
were a betting man, I'd bet
our community will make a
difference on Super Sunday."

New York (JTA) — Police are
investigating complaints of
assault and harassment lodg-
ed by seven Chasidic Jews
following what the police
described as "a snowball con-
frontation" in the Crown
Heights section of Brooklyn
early Sunday morning.
According to Officer Joe
Gallagher of the New York
City Police Public Informa-
tion Bureau, approximately
40 blacks coming from a par-
ty observed approximately
ten Chasidic Jews. "A
snowball confrontation en-
sued, escalating to rock and
bottle-throwing. There were
no injuries and no arrest," the
police report said.
